Worcester Ukulele Club In A Nutshell - WIP

Picture
We are The Worcester Ukulele Club! (also known as the WUCcies), and quite simply, we’re a friendly bunch, who love singing and playing our Ukes!

With an ever-increasing repertoire of songs (currently over 150), from ‘A You’re Adorable’ to 'Marguerita Time’ to ‘You Can’t Be A Pirate’, we’ll have a go at any song at least once (the part-time rock stars amongst us think we’re pretty damned good at some of em too!)

Travelling fellow rock star Ukers and newbies are always welcome to join us at our weekly party atmosphere club nights.

The Giggers amongst us perform at Music Festivals, Weddings and throughout the Community, where you can be sure of lots of sing along foot tapping.

We look forward to performing for you soon!

Club History

In May 2010, a few future members learned to play the ukulele on a course at The Elgar School of Music. They soon moved to the Lamb & Flag Pub, where landlord, Garry Jones, let them use the front bar on Monday evenings. A plaque over the bar commemorates that ‘Worcester Ukulele Club’ was formed in September that year.

Initially run on an informal basis, players would bring along songs to try out. Songs that worked best went into a list that could be played in public when entertainment opportunities arose. The back yard of the pub was one of the club’s first gig venues.

Membership quickly outgrew the Lamb & Flag Pub, and so the decision was made, to move to more spacious premises; though a special relationship is still maintained with our birthplace - some members still drop in for a drink there and we have performed at several gigs in the back room.

In April 2013, the club moved to Drummonds Bar, where more space was available, and club nights soon became much busier…

Due to the club’s rapid growth, more formal administration was required, so a committee was elected, and a constitution drawn up (see below for latest version). There are a maximum of 7 committee members, many of whom are normally present on Monday evenings, where they guide and coordinate as necessary. The constitution contains the rules of the club, which all prospective members should read.

In Feb 2017, after 3 1/2 great years in Drummonds Bar, the club moved again, to Fownes Hotel, where 50 - 60 members regularly turn up for club nights!

In Mar 2018, after a fab year in Fownes Hotel, WUC became nomads! Wandering around different Worcester-based venues.

In 2019, WUC settled in the Worcester University St John's campus.

2020 was a bit of a wash out traditional WUC clubnights... but marvellous for virtual gatherings, glued together by various club members, most specifically Colin B; and where honoury club membership increased globally! :-)

2021 continued with the virtual clubnight model created above, until end May when a few WUCcies braved the weather at The Bell Inn Broadheath, for what turned out to be the first regular 'pseudo clubnight' gathering. Later in the year, we moved to Christopher Whitehead Language College and Sixth Form.

In Mar 2022 we moved back to Worcester University St John's campus where we currently reside - see the Where We Meet page for details.

There are approximately 100 active club members. Many members also perform at gigs, raising money for the club’s chosen charity for that year. (see the Charity Donations link below) Popular music from all eras and genres is played, with a repertoire of over a gazillion songs.
