Quarantine Corner 2020

In these times of need, this page has been setup for WUCCIES to refer and see how other club members are coping with a prolonged absence from their Ukulele friends. Stay Ukulele happy!

Live At Home presents: Eirlys - Was I? by Madeleine Peyroux.
I heard this song for the first time about 2 months ago and I loved it! This is a collaboration with me on vocals and Uke, 'John He' also on Uke, and Johns' friends Brendan on the drums and Trevor Worrall  on Bass. When I asked John if he could add the drums and bass to my song I had no idea how difficult it was!  So thank you John for persevering when I might have given up. And also thanks to Brendan and John (Bass)! It’s a bit risqué but fun so we hope you enjoy it. Xxx
Very well done all of you. Loved the facial expressions too. GREAT 👍 Rick J
I loved it Eirlys.... but couldn't make out the words well enough to hear the 'risque" bits!! You know I'm collecting naughty words!!  xx Jean
Great all of you. Fab song. Love it.  X Bev

Live At Home presents: WUCKinver - Louise
This is a collaboration between two Kinver ukesters and myself. It is our version of a version by Bonnie Raitt of the sad tale of Louise. Thanks comes from a Bonnie Raitt album Sweet Forgiveness. Some nice songs and slide playing. 1977ish. We do the the  sharing of musical tastes in Kinver like Worcester and that was from Maggie on vocals and her husband Trevor on bass.Original was written by Paul Siebel and was first released by Paul Siebel in 1970 BTW.
Excellent! Amazing what can be done!  Enjoyed that. 👏🏻👏🏻 - Eirlys
Great singing & playing John. I haven't heard that song before! 🎵🎶 - Jean
She has a fantastic voice and the backing was well played with some good twiddly bits, nice song too 👍👍🤗🤗 - Rob
Great song  and playing - Bev

Live At Home presents: John H - Man of the World
A personal tribute, not good but the original Fleetwood Mac and PG in particular were important to me, with this track above all. RIP

Brilliant John !! I can remember you doing this as an open mic  at Worcester👏👏👏 - Rick

So hauntingly beautiful, John. Thank you. 🎸🎶 - Eirlys

Nice rendition J.....he was certainly a 'man of the world" sad to see him passing on 😪 - Robb

Live At Home presents: Rob - Things Have Changed

This is a Bob Dylan song which Rosemary posted in our Frilly song list so I had a go at it....listen out for harmonica bits 🎵🎶🤗

Excellent Rob..... especially when you sing & play harmonica at the same time!!!🤣🤣🎶🎵 - Jean
Thanks Rob. Brilliant. Love it! Great song too. 😀👍👏🏻👏🏻🎸🎶 - Eirlys
Great performance, Rob.  How do you sing a Dylan song AND play the harmonica at the same time?  Does that make you a smart-arse?  😊. Or perhap’s the answer’s just Blowin’ In The Wind! - Trevor

Live At Home presents: Trevor - Slowboat To China
A song for all those whose dreams of a cruise to the source of the virus have just been torpedoed by Government advice!
Excellent selection Trev 👏👏🎶👍👍🤣🤣 Rob
Great song Trevor. I'd love to go on a cruise BUT not to China!🛳⛴ Jean
I suspect it would be all to myself, alone, if you did go! ⛵️🛳 There wouldn’t be many takers.  Great song and rendition! Thanks Trevor 😀🎶🎸 Eirlys

Live At Home presents: Wilf - Comfortably Numb

I was challenged (polite way of putting it) by some Uke-sceptic chums to do Comfortably Numb on a Uke. We just got an i-Pad and I was keen to have a go at Garage Band... so here it is... a double tracked tenor uke, baritone banjolele, double tracked harmonica and Garage Band's bass. I enjoyed doing it, but may have irreparably damaged my marriage (joke). All the best

Live At Home presents: Eirlys - Streets of London
No singing, no strumming, a bit of an experiment doing something I haven’t done for a very long time ( apart from at John Hi’s party last October). Hope you like it.  You might recognise the tune. X🎹🎶
Great sound Eirlys. You're so talented!🎵🎶 Jean
Very good Eirlys. I always believed that you were a great musician and not just a ukulele player! 🎶👍 Phil
Eirlys so beautiful. You tipped me over the edge. Happening quite a lot at the moment. You play with such feeling. X Jenny

Live At Home presents: Colin - I Got A Pea

I recorded a song for my grandson yesterday. It was played 3 times at bedtime so it must be good.

That's the craziest thing I have woken up to since lockdown!! Thanks Colin cheered me up - Bev
Hi Colin. I’m not surprised that your grandson liked the song. It’s great! 😀👍🥦🥕🧅🥔🪀🪀🪀🪀 Eirlys

Sun 17 May 2020 - Two Months In Lockdown Completed To Here!

A sometimes daily / very rare QC summary so far:

Just some reminiscing thoughts and musings from your website editor... (tip - you may want to get yourself a coffee first!)...

Wow, who would have believed we'd still be in lockdown two months on? Fingers crossed, things are settling a bit now and as long as we are good girl, boy and non-binary ukulele rock-stars, it won't be too much longer before WUC can meet together again physically, albeit paying heed to whatever social distancing rules and regulations may be in place at the time (maybe our committee will need to hire a local field and portaloo? - only joking Allan!!).

Anyway, I thought you'd all be interested to know some facts and figures gathered from recent (unofficial) WUC goings on... 67 days of lockdown musical gestation has so far produced:

  • Stroom Virtual Meetings - Bizarrely, lots of WUCcers will have been seeing more of each other than ever before with at least 2 Stroom meetings taking place each week for many, mostly organised by the evergreen Colin with 'a little help from his friends' :-)
  • WhatsApp - I'm sure some members will have been in touch with each other privately too, but club-wise, the WhatsApp channel has been 'the place to be', regularly receiving 100's of updates throughout each day (including moral-boosting videos, jokes - good and terrible, thoughts and gossip, multiple quizzes from Elaine's quiz factory, and superb home performances). If anyone still wants to join in, just drop an email to: wucquarantinecorner@emaildodo.com (note - this is for verified WUC members only)
  • Live At Home - drum roll.... 51 'Live At Home' performances!... Just look / listen to them all listed below - gathered from Whatsapp and emails to wucquarantinecorner@emaildodo.com - a massive thanks to all contributors. If you listen to them in order, I think it is clear to see the mindset change from earlier negative and apprehensive days, to a more recent flourish of humour and outstanding talent. It's been really pleasing to see performances have been varied in genre and ability too - please keep em coming!
  • Equally amazing in the web editor's opinion have been Geoff's amazing collection of 34 instruments (as shown below). Personally I really looked forward each day to see what was next and was quite sad when the last one was posted. A bit of me thinks he should continue purchasing instruments, just so we can all continue marvelling!... but all good things... Maybe someone else would like to take up the baton? - you should know where to send an email by now... Not to be outdone however, Geoff's Album and Photographic contributions are still a regular feature - appreciated by all the WhatsApp WUCcers.

That's a few thoughts for now - if you want to respond, well, you know what to do!

Apols to those who's songs take a day or two to get posted... but needs must!

Finally, here are a few more Nearly on this day... happy days! - were you there?
  • 19/05/19 Hanley Swan - Tea Party for Help the Aged

Live At Home presents: Trevor - Nobody Wants You

Hi Wuccies

Yet another song about Covid.  I record these things on my iPhone using a free app called Music Memos.  For this one, I tapped the little drum-kit icon on the screen, and it added a drum beat!  Clever things, the iPhone and apps!

Excellent playing and singing Trevor also really liked the song Anne

Live At Home presents: Trevor - Angie is a Gas

My brother asked me yesterday whether I could still play Angie and Classical Gas. Almost!! 😊(It’s harder with 4 strings than with 6 though!)

I am speechless and that takes some doing! Outstanding Trevor. 🎸🎶 Eirlys

Live At Home presents: Trevor - Keep The Home Fires Burning

I know it’s the wrong war,  and I’ll try to do something more up to date later,  it I did hear Vera Lynn sing it on the telly last night, so I thought it would be a contribution to VE Day! 😊
Brilliant Trevor.  Who cares if it's the wrong war. The sentiments are the same!😊 Jean
That is amazing Trevor. Ardderchog! 😀 Eirlys

Live At Home presents: Phil Besame Mucho

I’ve had a go at Wucifying ‘Besame Mucho’ as played by Los Panchos that we follow on our Zoom meetings. I do love the Spanish language, but it’s hard to follow the words! I’ve attached the pdf and Word documents plus an English translation. The Beatles did a great English version back at the beginning of their career. Such clever boys. Live At Home presents: Allan From A Jack To A King
Hi all. If like me you would like to improve your picking, or you simply like this song you might like to take a look here. It was initially released in 1957 and did nothing. Ned Miller persisted and when it was re-released in 1962/1963, it became quite a big hit.  Recently it featured briefly in "The Crown", the Netflix series.
You'll notice that the song has no intro, and virtually no outro.  I've done a version in C (Ned Miller was in Eb) which uses  the instrumental as an intro and an outro as well (so 3 lots of picking for the price of one!). If you don't want to pick, there are chords to strum written in.  The chords are very basic, so it's a good one for newbies as well. It's a new song for the club so I'll also put it on the drive.
Hope you like it. Best wishes to all and nice to see the Zoomers last night. Allan.
That was a good session. It was great to see you all. Xx Pattie
A joy to see so many on the call this evening 🎶😊 Dave S
Great to see and hear so many people after spending all day alone  Eddie the cat doesn't say much and Piggy says even less. Thanks Colin for your hard work and anyone else who helped you. Bev
Wow, did anyone notice the final count on participants? Looks like 75 plus unless there are duplicate pictures! Sue M

A 'sometimes' daily update:
Well, we haven't had any 'Live at Home' performances for a few days, but the Whatsapp channel has been buzzing with:
  • jokes
  • baby pictures
  • serious discussion re. not being able to get your hair done

Sun 22 Mar 2020 (aka Mothers day)

Colin suggested and lead a great little zoom get together! 28 participants at one point! :-)

...weird how some members seem to have grown a lot of hair since they were last seen!

Today this little poem popped into my mind and I just had to write it down. To all sons and daughters from mothers everywhere - Keep safe, be strong and do what needs to be done so that we can survive this Coronavirus. Love from Eirlys xx

A 'sometimes' daily update:
  • Some more WUCcies joined the whatsapp chat - we now have 34 participants :-)
  • Some of the whatsapp guys and girls had a test Zoom meeting!... apparently not entirely in sync, but good enough to see and hear each other, which was the main thing :-)
  • The 'who is Bimble' mystery was finally resolved... (you had to be there I suppose!)
  • No one posted any 'Live at home' performances! :-(
My practice session for today place in cd press play and have a singalong just like a clubnight song sheets printed keep on strumming Colin R

Brilliant Trevor! 👌 Have major ukulele envy, but as I’m still new I want to wait until I can play a whole song before I buy a ‘serious one’. This week I’m going to attempt to teach myself ‘rip tide’ by Vance Joy and sing at the same time rather than just sticking my tongue and frowning. Bimble
Hi All

I thought I’d use the time that I would have spent at Frilly Lilly this morning in making a short video about my ukulele collection and the latest acquisition, which I got yesterday!  Watch and enjoy!

Cheers Trevor
Excellent review of your ukes Trev.  I guess you'll be needing some sheet music to go with it 🤣🤣 Rob

Hi all, I’m sending this via email because I haven’t got the faintest idea of how to attach it to Wotsapp! Attached is a sound clip of me playing my own simple version of While My Guitar Gently Whoops!  -  Whoops because there are duff notes aplenty and you can hear the central heating boiler fire up near the end! It’s not the Jake Shikambukuro version. It’s in a different key, for a start - Gm!  I worked it out based on playing the chords in the sequence at different positions up and down the fretboard and picking out the tune. There’s a tab sheet, which shows more or less what I’m doing. Something to keep you busy during lockdown! Cheers Trevor

Wed 18 Mar 2020 - and so it begins...

Rob and Jerry present a bit of 'Live from home'...

To start the ball rolling... several members have enquired about live streaming a clubnight from someones house, and everyone else playing along... hmmm... sounds like a good idea, but the logistics are pretty big (tell everyone how to setup accounts on what? zoom / facetime / skype?), and then there's the dreaded 'lag' time... a feeble example is here, showing just how hard it is for 2 people to try playing together!
