23/12/22 WUC Chair Update
Hello Wuccies ~ `Established` and New!!
What a year it has been! As we moved out of being locked down, we were still meeting at Christopher Whitehead School but we finally moved back to the University in April. So, I thought you might appreciate a quick review of what we have been up to as a club!
Visiting Presenters:
Firstly, we have had three very good workshop / presentation sessions.
Our starter was Phil Doleman in February. We experimented with ZOOM to allow those members who were unable to attend in person to view Phil`s session. This proved to be quite successful as a `one-off` but plans to repeat it have not progressed as things have eased somewhat now and no-one has taken up the offer to arrange further ZOOM sessions.
We had a further visit from Peter Moss in May and finally Manitoba Hal flew in from Canada again in June. Three very different approaches, all of whom have great talent and who try to impart some of it to us mere mortals!
Club Nights etc…
We have had a variety of club nights ranging from `back to basics` where we played acoustically to see how that felt to the full on `plugged in` mode with bass, drums and lead accompaniment from John He.
Several `theme` nights have been presented including another `Welsh` night in March and more recently Phil`s Animal Themed night which was a riot! We also had an `Alien Invasion` in September; there have been guest appearances by `Joyce and her Librarians`, The Ukaladiens, The Celebrashun Sisters and just the other week we had a guided tour by `SATNAV`!!
These have all been supplemented by Open Mic and Lucky Dip evenings where we haven`t a clue what will be next! In between there have been a variety of song nights with a range of leaders some of whom have dipped their ukes in for the first time! If you have not taken the plunge yet, then please give it some serious thought. We are a very tolerant and accepting bunch and you will get plenty of support from your fellow `Wuccies`!
Gigs and Fundraising:
This year has been another great year! No-one could ever say that Wuccies are idle when it comes to supporting good causes.
After the Ukraine War started in February we dived in for a FUNDRAISER in Worcester where we collected over £2000 for the Red Cross appeal to help Ukraine.
We have played a great number of gigs in a variety of venues. The easing of restrictions post-pandemic has really motivated everyone to start activities again. Also, the generosity of those who support us is amazing and we have quite often collected well over a hundred pounds at a gig, the most recent example being last week where we amassed nearly £350 on the same day from two gigs. Our enthusiasm for getting out there and playing is fantastic! (**I have just seen that the `Pudding Club` Gig last Saturday raised over £200 in one night…. well done Elaine and Crew!!)
As we approach the end of the year, we still have Children in Need on the 18th November to look forward to and of course we will be playing at the Victorian Fayre in Worcester on December 3rd. Credit must go to our fabulous `Bucket Rattlers` who tirelessly persuade the public to part with their cash. (editor's post note: CIN raised £2,200!)
As you know, we are now in the throes of choosing our charity for next year. This year`s choice - Pancreatic Cancer UK - has been another successful year and it looks as though we are on course to raise well over £10,000!! Well done to everyone for your fund-raising efforts!
Committee business:
Your Committee has met several times during the year. We have dealt with a number of issues and concerns including the organisation of club-nights, Muzodo, signing up for gigs and much more. We are a relaxed club with few rules and regulations and that is our main attraction in encouraging those who have often never touched a musical instrument or even sung a song to come along and enjoy our friendly atmosphere. One of the best innovations this year has been the introduction of `21st Century Transactions`! Thanks to our treasurer, Peter B, we now have the means to pay our subs by bank card and collect donations in the same way. It`s very much in the early days but it is clearly where the future lies when some of our audiences ask if they can donate on-line! So, thank you Peter.
Like all clubs, there are always a few people who go that bit further to make it what it is. Firstly, Colin TY is a wellspring of creative input with all the work he does getting songs organised and able to be projected on the screen at our club-nights. Trevor has been everywhere and doing everything from playing/leading at as many gigs as possible to organising beginners and improvers sessions, arranging and leading club-nights and doing a great job as our secretary by keeping the committee in order - and everyone else I suspect!!
We have a variety of jobs that are performed by committee members as well as others who take them on to help out. Elaine is currently organising the selection of our Charity for next year, John Hi is one of our Gig Bookers (I am the other one!) as well as leading gigs and playing excellent bass for us. Bev has used her experience in the media to gain us publicity and arrange fundraising gigs in Worcester; Lorry and Jean continue to do an excellent job keeping our Website up to date and managing our Facebook pages. And where would we be without our `bucket rattlers`, most notably Anne and Rosemary and their team!
There are so many others who contribute to the club in all sorts of ways so please forgive me if I don`t mention you all by name!
I would like to wish all of you a joyful and happy Christmas and New Year Season and look forward to continuing to see the club evolve as it has been doing over the past few years when not even a pandemic can daunt us! We welcome all comers as long as they are willing to have a go. As the years pass by we see many people dipping in and out of the club but it is our welcoming approach that makes WUC what it is!
Keep strumming and singing everyone….
